A.H. Belo Corporation makes $800,000 grant to benefit the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, Inc.


DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1996--A.H. Belo Corporation announced today that it made an $800,000 grant to The Dallas Foundation for the establishment of a fund to benefit the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, Inc. (FOIFT).

The grant is the lead gift in a $5 million endowment campaign.

Formed in 1978, the FOIFT works to encourage a greater appreciation and understanding of the First Amendment and protects the public's right to know through the Texas Public Information Act and the Texas Open Meetings Act.  Focus, a quarterly newsletter; and Education for Freedom in Texas, a four-volume set intended to help teachers in grades K-12 present First Amendment concepts to their students. FOIFT also sponsors an annual statewide conference on First Amendment issues for educators, politicians, attorneys, media representatives and private citizens, and is also a member of the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

Belo helped found the FOIFT in 1978 and has been its principal underwriter for the past decade, along with other news organizations and businesses throughout the state. Ralph Langer, senior vice president/executive editor of The Dallas Morning News, and John Miller, executive news director with WFAA-TV, currently serve on the FOIFT board of directors.
