Baillie, 58, was elected Chief Executive Officer of Toronto-Dominion Bank in 1997 and Chairman of the Board earlier this year. He joined the financial institution in 1964 and progressed through a variety of assignments both in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and Toronto. He was named Vice President and General Manager of the U.S.A. division in 1979 and, two years later, appointed Senior Vice President of that division. Baillie was elected Executive Vice President, Corporate & Investment Banking Group, in 1984. He went on to be elected Vice Chairman in 1992 and President of Toronto-Dominion in 1995.

A Canadian native, Baillie was graduated from the University of Toronto Research at the University of Toronto has been responsible for the world's first electronic heart pacemaker, artificial larynx, single-lung transplant, nerve transplant, artificial pancreas, chemical laser, G-suit, the first practical electron microscope, the first cloning of T-cells,  with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and economics in 1962.
