A-OMMMMM-K DAVID LYNCH ON MEDITATION, RAISING CONSCIOUSNESS AND EVERYTHING HE'LL SAY ABOUT 'INLAND EMPIRE'.

Byline: Glenn Whipp Film Writer

We haven't heard from David Lynch in the four years since he made the dreamlike noir ``Mulholland Dr.'' So when we found out Lynch would be speaking tonight at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , lecturing on ``Consciousness, Creativity and the Brain,'' we thought we'd check in with one of our favorite filmmakers.

Lynch, 59, has taken time out from editing his latest feature, ``Inland Empire In·land Empire

Lynch himself has meditated for 32 years and believes if more people spent 20 minutes a day repeating their mantra, there would be more fulfillment and much less suffering in the world.

Q: How has meditation influenced your filmmaking?

A: I've been doing this for 32 years, so I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what I'd be without it. But I can tell you that I enjoy the doing of things so much more. And fear and depression and anxiety can cripple a human being - and especially a filmmaker. There's so much pressure. And the pressure just starts lifting.

Q: It makes taking those phone calls from the studio easier ...

A: You do the action, not for the fruit of the action, but for the enjoyment of the action, and the fruit is gonna be what it's gonna be. But how many people really enjoy the doing? It's so beautiful. And when this container of consciousness starts expanding, you catch more ideas. Understanding grows. Awareness grows. Wakefulness wakefulness

Q: Have you invited any studio heads to your talk?

A: (Laughs) I would love for them to come. There was an article about one of the studio heads running his operation on fear. It's totally absurd. If I ran my set on fear, I wouldn't get 1 percent of what I get. No one would go the extra mile, no one would enjoy the work. You're just putting this fear and stress on people, and that doesn't work.

Q: It seems that movies today are made more from a fear of failure than risking for success.

A: It's fear and ignorance that really runs the show and a lot of negative things flying about. And it's not just Hollywood.

Q: In July, you christened the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. The goal is to raise $7 billion to fund seven universities of world peace in seven different countries. Seven billion. One of your colleagues called it a ``very Lynchian number.''

A: (Laughs) Well, $7 billion sounds like a lot, but when the military spends $7 billion, we don't blink an eye. Spending $7 billion for consciousness-based education and world peace would be spending it to let human beings realize their full potential, and it would be spending money to bring real peace on earth. Not just an absence of war, but real peace.

Q: You've filmed your next movie.

A: Yes.

Q: ``Inland Empire.'' Does it take place in San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

 County?

A: We did film some out there. It's not really about that area, though.

Q: Yeah, your assistant told me that all you'd tell me is that it's about ``a woman in trouble.''

A: She is in trouble, yes.

Q: Laura Dern?

A: Yes.

Q: Do you hope to have it in theaters next year?

A: I hope to. (At this point, Lynch's assistant interjects: ``That's the most I've heard him say about the movie in a long time.'')

Q: You're so passionate about practicing meditation. Have you ever thought of incorporating these ideas into one of your films?

A: If an idea came. I go by ideas and falling in love with them. If an idea came that showed these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Music Video
