When Ellen DeGeneres took the stage as the first out gay host of the Academy Awards (right), even cynical gay hearts skipped a beat. We cheered later that night as well, when Melissa Etheridge made history as the first lesbian Oscar winner to thank her wife and children. In a year overflowing with images both inspiring and dispiriting, Oscar night 2007 gave us a snapshot of inclusion.
