Judaism and Jewish life

DS135

In this translation from the Yiddish of Erinerungen fun mayn leben, Margoshes (1866-1955) vividly portrays growing up in an era of changing Jewish life in Poland as part of Austro-Hungarian Galicia. His memoir provides entertaining anecdotes and insights into aspects of urban and rural Jewish life, conflicts between Orthodox and Enlightenment Jews, the complex relationship between Jews and their Gentile neighbors, and the inner workings of the Galician Jewish Press. He was later a prominent journalist for the Jewish press in New York. The account concludes with a family genealogy and glossary.
