A wonderful time of year?


NO, NOT BECAUSE the kids are headed back to school! Rather, because September signals the end of those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer and the beginning of the holiday selling season. Sure, autumn leaves are nice to look at, but fragrance and skin care marketers along with their retail partners have their gaze set upon the most profitable portion of the calendar.

With the global economy in turmoil, what kind of holiday season will it turn out to be? Well, at least one report isn't very promising. According to according to

 Marketing survey of 1,100 consumers in the U.S., most are cutting back shopping at all major retail channels compared with six months ago.

The WSL survey found that the only places where consumers shopped significantly more were dollar stores and mass merchandisers.  marketers could be singing the blues by year's end. And all the GWPs in the world wouldn't change their tune.

If you're reading this from an office in the northeastern portion of the U.S., chances are you were left in the dark a couple weeks back by the Blackout of 2003. If you weren't prepared for the emergency with a dozen or so vanilla, bayberry bayberry, common name for the Myricaceae, a family of trees and shrubs with aromatic foliage, found chiefly in temperate and subtropical regions. The waxy gray "berries" of the North American wild or cultivated bayberry shrubs (chiefly Myrica cerifera  or pumpkin candies, well, shame on you--candles have been a good growth story for our industry for nearly 10 years!

How fitting, then, that this issue of Happi includes a detailed article on candles and other great-smelling stuff (p. 73). Associate editor Veronica MacDonald reports that although candles sales may have cooled, marketers are launching a wide array of other products designed to scent the environment around you.

This issue of Happi also includes articles on UV protection in skin care products (p. 81), a surfactant Surfactant Definition
