A widow's fight.

Were you surprised by the decision?

I wasn't surprised, but I do feel like my civil rights have been violated vi·o·late

. My wife and I had been married for 18 years, raised my two children together, owned a house together, worked together in a business; but in New York none of that seems to matter. I understand that my case was denied because there was a precedent for it, but nevertheless I think it's awful. It's like, Why am I being treated like this? Why is my loss any less than that of the heterosexual heterosexual /het·ero·sex·u·al/ (-sek´shoo-al)

What about appealing the decision?

There's really no point in appealing. I think it would take gay marriage to pass for this not to happen to anyone else. I don't think as many straights are against it as we think. I think they get stuck on the word. I don't care

 what you call it, but give me the same benefits, both emotionally and financially, that a straight couple has.

Are there other legal options left?

I can still sue for my pain and suffering. We have a start date of September 27. I'm hoping it doesn't go to trial and that we can settle, but I'm going to move forward with this. I want to see something happen.
