yesterday met youngsters at St Mary's RC Primary in Whickham who have developed their own link with Africa.

They established their friendship with a Kenyan primary school three years ago.

Mr Benn also watched pupils learning about life in India and fair-trade products, and joined in a lesson about a couple living in an African village.

Mr Benn was in the region to speak about world poverty at two conferences.

Mr Benn said: "We now live in a truly global society. Many aspects of our lives are influenced by events across the globe. I welcome this work to ensure that children learn about global issues."
