A walk for life.

Byline: Winston Ross The Register-Guard

When Amber McCullers first started planning a walk to raise awareness about suicide in the wake of her brother's death in April, she figured it would be her and a few family members.

She figured wrong. As many as 700 people swarmed Alton Baker Park Alton Baker Park is located in Eugene, Oregon, United States, near Autzen Stadium. It features duck ponds, bicycle trails, and a dog park, and directly touches the Ferry Street Bridge.  on Sunday, to McCullers' amazement. The turnout was a poignant result, especially considering the event's key focus: to bring the discussion about suicide "Out of the Darkness," the walk's theme.

It's pretty hard to keep 700 people under wraps.

They streamed onto the paths along the Willamette River Willamette River

Suicide can be a taboo topic, and that's part of the reason more than 33,000 Americans kill themselves each year.

People don't talk about it enough, McCullers said, so when someone's contemplating suicide, they often keep it to themselves. Sunday's showing of community support was anything but quiet.

"It's amazing," McCullers said, beaming. "I think it's something the community wanted."

Darlene Baker came to remember her 16-year-old daughter, Jennifer, who shot herself 13 years ago in the family's Pleasant Hill home. Mom was at home that day with her only child. She heard the gunshot.

Jennifer hadn't given her mother any indication that she was unhappy, Baker said as she walked Sunday. She was active in sports and earned good grades. But three days before her death, the girl penned a suicide note A suicide note is a message left by someone who later attempts or commits suicide. It is estimated that 12-20% of suicides are accompanied by a note.[1] However, incidence rates may depend on race, method of suicide, and cultural differences and may reach rates as high  and gave it to one of her friends at school.

"It said this was no joke, that she wasn't going to be there anymore, that she was done," Baker said.

The student shared the note with other classmates Classmates can refer to either:

"She wrote that she was sorry she disappointed us," Baker said, choking back tears. "There was no way she was a disappointment to us."

Baker hoped Sunday's event would persuade people to sit their children down to talk about suicide, the same way they might have a discussion about drugs or sex - but pre-emptively.

"We don't think it applies to our kids," said Baker, who started a fund in her daughter's name - see www.jenniferbakerfund.org - to pay for outreach efforts in schools and throughout the community. "Or we think if we talk about it, we're just going to make it happen - which is exactly the opposite of the truth."

Even with warning signs, it can be hard to stop suicide, said Al and Jeanette Laskey, both adorned with a laminated print of their son, Eli, who killed himself with a shotgun in the woods near Winberry Creek, in eastern Lane County, in 2000.

Eli had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder bipolar disorder, formerly manic-depressive disorder or manic-depression, severe mental disorder involving manic episodes that are usually accompanied by episodes of depression. , his parents said Sunday, and they tried to get him committed after he dismantled Ken Kesey's monument atop Mount Pisgah Mount Pisgah is the name of several mountains and places: Mountains

at the urging of the voices in his head.

A county judge ruled that the young man was not a danger to himself or others, and Eli soon disappeared into the woods.

Two months later, his body was found in a creek, where it had been for weeks. His mother had labeled his clothing, or he might not have been identifiable.

"We knew he needed help," Jeanette Laskey said. "This community needs more resources to fight this problem."

McCullers' goal is to raise enough money to start a Eugene chapter of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, so that the group can offer classes in schools and create educational videos about how to prevent suicide.

As she spoke to a reporter Sunday, Mc Cullers was interrupted repeatedly - by people wanting to know to whom to make out a check.
