A tribute to Berrigan. (Letters to the Editor).I had been waiting for someone to write a tribute to Phil Berrigan, and Howard Zinn Howard Zinn (born August 24, 1922) is an American historian, political scientist, social critic, activist and playwright, best known as author of the bestseller, A People's History of the United States. certainly did an excellent job ("A Holy Outlaw," February issue). I never met Phil, but I have been inspired by his work for decades. When he burned the draft records in Catonsville, I seriously considered doing something similar at my local board, but lacked the courage. I settled for doing draft counseling and attending demonstrations. In the early '70s, I met a fellow who had done time with Phil and Dan in Danbury. He described it as a great experience. The prison was divided into various factions. Black Panthers Black Panthers, U.S. African-American militant party, founded (1966) in Oakland, Calif., by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. Originally espousing violent revolution as the only means of achieving black liberation, the Black Panthers called on African Americans to arm , Black Muslims Black Muslims, African-American religious movement in the United States, split since 1976 into the American Muslim Mission and the Nation of Islam.
