Brian J. Doyle (born April 7, 1950) was the deputy press secretary for the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Beyond the easy pleasure of simply enjoying it as a thought-provoking meditation, its theme of "the holy act of eating" inspired me to use it as our family's grace before Christmas dinner Christmas dinner is the primary meal traditionally eaten on Christmas Day. It is often seen as the main event of the day for which the family all gathers and eats together. . Happily there were 10 perfect paragraphs--allowing each of our 10 (perfect) family members to read aloud one paragraph.

It was great fun to choose ahead of time who would read what. What a spiritual aperitif aperitif (·perˈ·  preceding the many rich courses of family joy shared that day. From the 10-year-old to the 71-year-old, everyone was touched by what was read and loved participating in what may well become a new family tradition.
