A tour of Bayfield County via its local newspaper.

Newspaper: The County Journal, 324 W. Bayfield St., Washburn WI 54891; published Wednesdays; $23 per year.

Local newspapers can often provide outsiders with a window through which they can get a pretty good view of what an area is like. Here are some of the stories in The County Journal for Oct. 14, 1993.

A daring bank robbery

The main news was a daring daytime bank robbery in Washburn-the fourth in Northern Wisconsin in six weeks. Police were on the scene within three minutes and roadblocks were in place in five minutes, but the robber escaped.

The week's other major story was the crash of a single engine plane near Herbster, which killed two people from Minnesota.

The sheriff's log included a hunting accident involving a man from Illinois; five accidents; five deer-car accidents; four burglaries, two criminal damage reports; five thefts; three harassment calls; three minor fire calls; and one report of deer shining.

Bears a-plenty

In other news, 173 bears causing damage to farm crops, mostly corn, were live trapped and moved in 1993, in Bayfield and Douglas Counties. Eighteen were taken from one farm near Ino (near the center of Bayfield County).

A potluck supper and town meeting was to be held in Washburn to plan the town's future.

The New York-based dance company Ballet Hispanico was to perform at Northland College in Ashland, Ashland High School, and the Bad River Community Center. Tickets are $12 and $14. Also scheduled at the college was a faculty art show featuring photography, paintings, and pottery.

The 59-member Washburn Chamber of Commerce established a Winter Events Committee.

The Washburn High School Choir will present a concert, "Rock On," "a celebration of the great rock songs of the 50's" through today.
