), is playing a central role in shaping the county's future economic profile.

The UK's fastest-growing science, engineering and technology park, the North East Technology Park (NETPark) at Sedgefield, is a key part of that future. On behalf of the County Council, CDDC is driving forward this hugely significant development and directly manages the highly successful NETPark Incubator incubator, apparatus for the maintenance of controlled conditions in which eggs can be hatched artificially. Incubator houses with double walls of mud, a fireroom, and several compartments each holding about 6,000 hens' eggs were developed in ancient times; the .

PETEC's aim is to help SMEs in this sector grow and develop by giving them access to facilities in which they would not otherwise be able to invest.

State-of-the-art facilities and tailored business support that enables companies to achieve their potential is also part of the package." To prosper, regions must drive innovation, harness their intellectual power and attract knowledge-based investment, creating and sustaining an infrastructure that encourages investment and R& D activity.

Mr Watkins said: "NETPark is a key component in achieving this, but not all companies can or need be physically located there. Our specialist support service for science, engineering and technology ... all being located at click of a companies, NETPark Net, is the ideal way to extend NETPark's benefits to innovative businesses throughout the region.

"NETPark Net provides its growing online community with web-based access to all the benefits of being physically located at NETPark at the click of a mouse." From a virtual office facility at NETPark, through to workshops and networking events, engineering and technology businesses can share knowledge and link to innovation networks around the world.

The project has attracted significant regional support, receiving Single Programme and European Regional Development Fund backing.

NETPark Net, put simply, is NETPark "without walls". Designed to open up an enormous fund of knowledge in technology and R& D to any company looking to increase its competitiveness through interaction and innovation, it is particularly suited to SMEs in the early stages of growth, or those wishing to adopt greater innovation in their products or processes.
