A threat to gay parents.
Now that antigay forces have gained momentum in banning same-sex
marriage in states across the nation, will adoption rights for gays be
next? The U.S. Supreme Court on January 10 declined to hear an appeal to
Florida's blanket ban on adoption by gays--which, some argue, could
open the door for more state bans.
Arkansas state senator Jim Holt said he is working on legislation
that would bar gay people not only from adopting but also from being
foster parents. "We don't want to allow homosexual
marriages," he said. "What would we think about [placing] a
child that has no say-so in that scenario at all?"
Currently only Florida, Mississippi, and Utah limit adoption by
gays.
