A third of recalled beef went to schools

Federal officials say that more than one-third of the 143 million pounds of California beef recalled last week went to school lunch programs.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Administrator Eric Steiner said Thursday that about 50 million pounds went to schools and that 20 million pounds have already been eaten.

Meanwhile, San Bernardino County prosecutors say a second worker fired over alleged abuses at the slaughterhouse at the heart of the recall surrendered to Chino police Wednesday.

Luis Sanchez pleaded not guilty Thursday to three misdemeanors involving illegal movement of sick or injured cattle. He remains in custody in lieu of $15,000 bail and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing next week.
