A tale of two workshops.There are many ways to spend one's summer. Teachers face this quandary every June as the kiln is disconnected, the brushes given one last cleaning, and the extra clay placed in a cabinet to harden over vacation time. Of course, the term vacation doesn't apply to everyone. There is summer school to teach, or work of all kinds to be performed to keep the Visa Card under control and the landlord, or landlady landlady n. female of landlord or owner of real property from whom one rents or leases. (See: landlord) , in good spirits Adv. 1. in good spirits - without losing equilibrium; "she took all his criticism in stride" in stride . If time and circumstance do allow, there are many options. Traipsing off to Amsterdam or Cancun or Sitka are possibilities. So is watching the grass grow around the old homestead ... or, one could do a role reversal In psychodrama, role reversal is a technique where the protagonist is asked, by the psychodrama director, to exchange roles with another person (an auxiliary ego) on the psychodrama stage. The former assumes as many of the roles of the other as possible and vice versa. and become a student rather than a teacher by enrolling in a university summer program for those three credits towards a degree or the next pay classification. One could also consider enrolling in one of the many summer art workshops that have developed in this country and abroad. Why make the effort and pay out your hard-earned money? Let me count the ways. * To get away from: school kids, your kids, it all. * To allow the creative juices to flow ... again. * To increase one's skills in a media, process or art form. * To work with, and get to know a recognized artist. * To receive feedback on your art work from an artist you respect. * To extend your ideas and beliefs about creative expression. * To form new friendships with fellow artists/teachers. * To become a better teacher, artist, person. * Just for yourself. You may also want to review the advertisements in this issue of SchoolArts. Each summer, many vacationers make choices between the mountains and the ocean for their summer hiatus. Since it's impossible to describe all of the summer workshops one could choose from... from Arrowmont to Woodstock, I'll go into some detail about Anderson Ranch (no relation, unfortunately) in the breathtaking Aspen/Snowmass area of Colorado. I'll also describe the annual Art Educator's Forum at the Savannah College of Art and Design SCAD enrolls more than 7,000 students from all 50 states and 100 countries. International student enrollment is 10-12 percent. Nationally known artists who will be conducting workshops this summer include Rafael Ferrer Rafael Ferrer (born 23 March 1960 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actor. Ferrer is the son of José Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney, and the brother of Miguel and Gabriel. He is a cousin of George Clooney. , Phyllis Bramson, Richard Bosman, Paul Soldner, Sam Maloof Sam Maloof (born January 24 1916 in Chino, California) is a furniture designer and maker. His work has been displayed in museums around the United States. Jerry N. Uelsmann (born 11 June 1934 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American photographer. . Every Sunday and Tuesday night in summer, the Ranch hosts a community slide lecture by visiting faculty. An interesting adjunct is the Children's Program, offering a wide range of workshops to two age groups: six to eight and nine to twelve. The titles of this summer's workshops include Clay & Painting, The Young Raiders of the Lost Art, Beginning Photography and Creative Containers. College of Art & Design A week of workshops, social activities, and a beach party will be the agenda of nearly 400 high school art teachers who will gather June 12-19 in Savannah, Georgia, at the 8th Annual Art Educator's Forum at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Over forty workshops will be offered, ranging from computer art to watercolor painting. For one week each summer, the college opens its classrooms, residence halls, computer labs, darkrooms, editing suites and painting studios to art educators for a low-cost week of workshops and social events. Art educators will attend one morning session and one afternoon session each day for a total of thirty classroom hours that can be applied toward recertification recertification Recredentialing Graduate education A process in which a professional is periodically re-evaluated–eg, every 10 yrs by an accrediting body to assure continued provision of safe, high-quality health care credits.
