A tale of two state visits: Mbeki vs Bush.


A state visit to Britain is a grand affair. The Queen rides in the open-top state coach with the visiting head of state to receive the greetings and adoration of her subjects lined up on the pavements with flags and flowers. It is all an open and relaxed affair, with a lot of hand-waiving and smiles. That was what the South African president, Thabo Mbeki Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki (born June 18 1942) is the current President of the Republic of South Africa.<ref name="gcis-profile2004" /> Early years
Born and raised in what is now the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Mbeki is the son of Govan Mbeki (1910
, got when he came on a state visit in June 2001.

, George W. Bush, was given a state visit by the Queen. President Bush is supposed to be a "fighter for democracy and freedom" for the peoples of the world, especially those in Afghanistan and Iraq. At least, that is what he says. Yet, on his state visit to London, George London, George (b. Burnstein) (1919–85) bass-baritone; born in Montreal, Canada. He studied voice in Los Angeles and made his operatic debut at the Hollywood Bowl in 1941.  "Freedom" Bush arrived at Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace (bŭk`ĭng-əm), residence of British sovereigns from 1837, in Westminster metropolitan borough, London, England, adjacent to St. James's Park.  in a helicopter and left three days later in a helicopter. His fast-moving motorcade (bomb-proof, with tinted windows) avoided the 200,000 demonstrators (the police insist 100,000) who wanted him to go home.

The London-based Sunday Mirror, reported--under the headline "Queen's fury as Bush goons wreck garden"--that the president's state visit "caused thousands of pounds of damage to [the] gardens at Buckingham Palace ... Lawns ruined when turned into helipads ... Exotic plants crushed by security men ... Shrubs damaged by helicopter rotors ... Trees hacked down to stop snipers ..."
