A sympathy for growing pains. (Vermont).

With friends like CLF-Vermont, farmers in the state don't need--any more friends? Not quite, but our efforts are unquenchable on behalf of a culture that has made red barns as "Vermont" as green mountains. The recently created Farm Viability Program provides targeted, farm-specific business assistance that is focused on helping farmers to increase their profits. Together with other CLF farm initiatives, the program is paving the way for a series of new policy and legislative initiatives. Farming has become a headline issue in Vermont. CLF's work has resulted in legislative language being prepared for many of the new initiatives, which are being incorporated into bills. Vermont's new governor, Jim Douglas, received a standing ovation during his inaugural address when he told the state legislature: "Let us renew our commitment to the family farmers who have contributed so much to Vermont's character, and whose lives are dedicated to feeding others, but who now struggle to sustain themselves."

Soon after Douglas spoke, the Vermont Council on Agriculture Viability presented a new and broad vision for agriculture in the state. It echoed many of the recommendations already put forth by CLF, including those for tax incentives, promotion of local agricultural products, and improved profitability of Vermont farming.
