A survey of more than 7,000 students in 122 New South Wales schools found that about one-third of the respondents had drunk `hazardous' amounts of alcohol in the two weeks before the survey was conducted. (Drugs).

Sydney is the capital. The other principal urban centers are Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Lismore, Wollongong, and Broken Hill. More than half the population live in the Sydney metropolitan area. Located in the temperate zone, the state has a generally favorable climate. schools found that about one-third of the respondents had drunk `hazardous' amounts of alcohol in the two weeks before the survey was conducted.

More than eight in 10 children aged between 12 and 17 had tried alcohol, and 6% of boys admitted to being heavy drinkers (Sydney Morning Herald, 25/10/01, p.3).
