PARSONS Artistic director, Parsons Dance, NYC NYC abbr. New York City NYC New York City I did a summer arts program in Kansas City when I was 12. My mother needed to get rid of me. I was fortunate enough to work with Paul Chambers and Cliff Kirwin, who had a small contemporary company called the Missouri Dance Theater. They had worked with the dance pioneer Hanya Holm, and so the Holm technique was the first that I learned. As my technical abilities grew, so did my freedom as a performer, and I realized that there was a possibility of a career in dance. The first piece that I ever choreographed was with a trampoline onstage to music by Led Zeppelin. At the end, I exited by grabbing onto a pipe and pulling my legs up as the curtain closed--never coming down. At that age the exciting thing was having so many other young people interested in the arts around me. (See Parsons Dance New York City New York City: see New York, city. The company is currently based in the War Memorial Opera House, where it is directed by Helgi Tomasson. I was probably 15 or 16 when I attended The Royal Ballet's summer program. It was my first time overseas. The Royal Ballet was my favorite company and I was in awe of everyone. I felt so honored to be there, just going to the opera house, trying different kinds of food, being in a dorm with 20 girls in one room. They have a different way of working, very Russian teachers. We learned repertoire from The Royal Ballet and had a choreography workshop as well. It was the first time I worked with choreographers on new pieces and had something made on me, which really opened my eyes. I was one of the only Americans so it was an extreme learning process. When you get to work with teachers with such different styles, you pick up their individual techniques and tricks. When you leave at night you can't go back home to your parents. You go back to the dorms so you're always living in this learning environment. Stay open and remember that you're there to learn things about yourself as a dancer. Some are obvious, and then there are things you learn through saying to yourself, "That's not what I want to do; maybe this isn't the direction I want to go." No matter what, every bit of knowledge you walk away with is valuable. |
