A summer Serenade.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Serenade, Balanchine's gift to his first students in America, makes its way north this month for a rendition by the Maine State Ballet. Staged by artistic director Linda MacArthur Miele, the wistful, timeless dance (which turned 75 this year) will be the centerpiece on the company's summer gala program, Aug. 7-8 and 14-15 in Falmouth, ME. Miele, who danced with New York City Ballet under Balanchine, also presents her neo-classical Britten and a new Napoli-inspired pas de deux. In something more contemporary but still steeped in history, the dancers take on Sara Whale's 'Til We Meet Again, set to poetry about the Civil War. See www.mainestateballet.org.
