National Trust volunteers at Plas Newydd have built a hide overlooking the Menai Strait Menai Strait (mĕn`ī), channel of the Irish Sea, 14 mi (23 km) long and from 200 yd (183 m) to 2 mi (3.2 km) wide, between the island of Anglesey and mainland Gwynedd, NW Wales. in an area of the Anglesey estate called Church Bank. Led by Trust community warden John Whitley, they used timber -including oak, sweet chestnut,cedars, hazel and European larch -found ``lying about''. The hide lies on a new series of paths leading through the estate. Mr Whitley said: ``We spotted 37 different types of birds including a black-throated diver and a little egret egret (ēgrĕt`), common name for several species of herons of the Old and New Worlds, belonging to the family Ardeidae. Before they were protected by law the birds were nearly exterminated by hunters seeking their beautiful, white, silky . ``Now we want visitors and twitchers to enjoy and appreciate the hide which is in a spectacular spot with impressive views of yr Efl mountains and Llanedwen church.
