Novak was not the only journalist to reward sources with favorable publicity. One of the most notorious examples is the way Walter Winchell Walter Winchell (April 7 1897 – February 20, 1972), an American newspaper and radio commentator, invented the gossip column at the New York Evening Graphic. He broke the journalistic taboo against exposing the private lives of public figures, permanently altering the  built J. Edgar Hoover Noun 1. J.  into a demigod (person) demigod - A hacker with years of experience, a national reputation, and a major role in the development of at least one design, tool, or game used by or known to more than half of the hacker community.  during the many years the FBI director kept the columnist supplied with juicy items. Less well known is the role Drew Pearson, a very prominent columnist from the '30s through the '50s, played in building Lyndon Johnson's national reputation in return for tips from the rising star on Capitol Hill.
