IT MAY not have displayed works from the War Artists' Advisory Committee like the Tate gallery Tate Gallery, London, originally the National Gallery of British Art. The original building (in Millbank on the former site of Millbank Prison), with a collection of 65 modern British paintings, was given by Sir Henry Tate and was opened in 1897.  did in 1989 to mark the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of war, but, then again, the Merseyside Polonia exhibition at the Town Hall was no ordinary World War II commemoration.

The idea was to show through the images of wartime damage the similarities of experiences of people in Liverpool and Gdansk. And that's exactly what the 32 photographs illustrated.
