I've never seen the Rio Grande up close, but I've been told that at many points it is unimpressive as a border landmark. At times, the river does not appear to be much more than a stream, often trickling along a concrete path.

Whether the U.S.-Mexican border is marked by the Rio Grande or by an arbitrary line in the desert, the physical barrier is hardly insurmountable. What had kept business from being conducted across the border in the past were customs and tariff regulations, the language barrier, the lack of buying power in Mexico and fear of the unknown.

Increasingly over the past quarter century, the tariff and customs hurdles have been lowered, with the NAFTA agreement being the most prominent trade pact reached. By most accounts, these agreements have also helped build a Mexican middle class that can afford more goods and services.

The language barrier remains, but is hardly insurmountable for most companies. In the U .S., finding a capable Spanish-speaking employee should not pose a difficulty (especially in the Southwest), and English remains a commonly learned language in Mexico.

Fear of the unknown can remain a hurdle for people on either side of the border. But most business owners would agree, operating from a base of fear is not the way to manage a growing business.

LA BARRERA SE REDUCE

Nunca he visto al Rio Bravo de cerca, pero me han dicho que, como delineacion de la frontera, no tiene nada de espectacular. En tramos, el rio no parecer ser mucho mas que un riachuelo, a menudo escurriendose escasamente sobre un lecho de concreto.

Independientemente de si la frontera entre Mexico y Estados Unidos esta delineada por el Rio Bravo o por una linea arbitraria en el desierto, la barrera fisica no es para nada infranqueable. Anteriormente, los reglamentos aduanales y arancelarios, la barrera del idioma, la falta de poder adquisitivo en Mexico y el temor a lo desconocido habian obstaculizado las relaciones comerciales a traves de la frontera.

Durante los ultimos veinticinco anos, los obstaculos arancelarios y aduanales se han ido reduciendo cada vez mas. El convenio TLCAN es el pacto mas prominente celebrado hasta la fecha.

La barrera del idioma sigue existiendo, pero para la mayoria de las empresas no es tan dificil de derribar. En Estados Unidos, encontrar un empleado capacitado de habla hispana no debiera ser dificil (especialmente en el sureste) y el ingles sigue siendo el idioma extranjero que se aprende mas comunmente en Mexico.

El temor a lo desconocido puede seguir siendo un obstaculo para personas en ambos lados de la frontera. Sin embargo, la mayoria de los propietarios de comercios estarian de acuerdo en que trabajar basandose en el temor no es la forma de administrar un negocio en crecimiento.
