A salute to Tallchief.Last fall The Metropolitan Museum of Art presented "A Tribute to Ballet Great Maria Tallchief Noun 1. Maria Tallchief - United States ballerina who promoted American ballet through tours and television appearances (born in 1925) Tallchief " as part of its lecture series. The legendary dancer and teacher talked about her life and career with Anna Kisselgoff, Francis Mason, and Larry Kaplan (Tallchief's biographer). Trained by Bronislava Nijinska, Tallchief joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Ballet company formed in Monte Carlo in 1932. The name derived from Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, which dissolved after his death in 1929. Under René Blum and Col. W. in 1942 and married Balanchine in 1946. She played a major role in forming the New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946. and for years she was Balanchine's muse. Later she became artistic director of the Chicago Lyric Opera Ballet, and a founder of the Chicago City Ballet. In 1996 she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame The National Women's Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by a group of people in Seneca Falls, New York, the location of the 1848 Women's Rights Convention.
