The overall aims are to strengthen community development and to help residents get a taste of a host of adult learning courses and opportunities.

The East End People's Story has been given the grant by the Government's Transformation Fund, which aims to promote and encourage informal adult learning.

The project was officially launched yesterday at the East End Pool and Library, off Shields Road, Byker.

At the event, tutors and project organisers were on hand to present a range of tasters of courses and seek residents' ideas for things they would like to do.

Carol Hunter, the project's activities coordinator, said: "The launch was just the start of many different kinds of learning for people in the East End.

"We've all discovered a lot about our part of the city and our own backgrounds, interests and ideas.

"There were sessions that were very practical, ranging from beauty tips to radio skills, introductions to good food and health, and a lot about our changing East End.

"It was also great fun." Six local organisations secured the grant in tough competition with hundreds of other groups from across the country.
