A response to Joseph P. Winnick (Palaestra, 23(2), 4, 9--Spring, 2007).

We at the American Association American Association refers to one of the following professional baseball leagues:
  • American Association (19th century), active from 1882 to 1891.
  • American Association (20th century), active from 1902 to 1962 and 1969 to 1997.

inter·scho·las
sports for young people with disabilities and would like to share our experiences in this regard.

The AAASP model, which provides interscholastic athletics for students with physical disabilities or visual impairments. has been more fully developed in the past five years. It includes components of all five types of sports proposed within Table 1 (AIMS) of Dr. Winnick's guest editorial.

In 2003, through AAASP's alliance with the Georgia High School Association The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) governs athletic and club events for member high schools in Georgia. The GHSA is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. 402 public and private high schools comprise the association.  (GHSA GHSA Georgia High School Association
GHSA Governors Highway Safety Association (Washington, DC)
GHSA Georgia High School Athletic Association
GHSA Guelph-Humber Student Association (Canada)
), a wheelchair track and field division was added to the GHSA track and field season. At local meets. wheelchair competitors compete in their events (against time) after the non-disabled heat. For example, the 200 m wheelchair race follows the 200 m race. Local coaches electronically send the wheelchair racer times to AAASP. At the end of the season. competitors' results are compiled to determine the top eight girls and boys who advance to the state GHSA meets in the wheelchair division. The state wheelchair track and field records are documented with the non-disabled records in the GHSA Constitution and By-Laws.

In 2004. GHSA Boys and Girls boys and girls

Basketball Championships added the AAASP Georgia Wheelchair Basketball Wheelchair basketball is a sport played primarily by people with disabilities. In some countries such as Canada, Australia and England, able-bodied athletes are allowed to compete alongside other athletes on mixed teams.  Championship to its tournament schedule. The competitions were held at a 12,000-seat arena and televised on all Georgia Public Broadcast stations. The wheelchair basketball game was the fifth most watched game (350,000 viewers) of all the televised games over three days. Our fourth combined championship was held on March 9, 2007. The above descriptions correlate to number's 1 and 2 as described in the AIMS Table.

Another important issue that AAASP addresses is the removal of barriers to participation in interscholastic or local-level sports that are modeled after adult and Paralympic-level sports. Components of the barriers include: a) rules of play; b) policies and procedures Policies and Procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental ; c) training for teachers, coaches and officials; d) standardization: e) transportation; f) recruitment; g) scheduling; h) venues; i) selection of sports and sports seasons; j) eligibility, delivery systems; k) partnerships; 1) funding; m) determining appropriate program placement within local school systems: n) parent education; o) data collection; p) league management; q) advocacy; r) equipment: s) job duties; t) team composition; u) varsity and junior varsity play; v) resources for teachers and coaches, etc.

The sports are typically held at local school gyms with school lift buses providing transportation. Teachers serve as team coaches. Practices and competitions are held in each sport throughout a 10-week season. In every way, these sports are an integral part of the students' educational experience. Participants begin to identify their teammates as their peer group and form lasting friendships, just as the non-disabled experience.

AAASP has a policy for adding non-disabled players to rosters, if the local team does not have enough students with physical disabilities to field a team. The above examples correlate to numbers 3 and 4 as described in the AIMS Table.

AAASP advocates for students to be included on traditional teams if they can be successfully integrated. This example relates to regular sports as described as number 5 of the AIMS Table.

We have student-athletes with physical disabilities participating in athletics through AAASP's model who have been involved in each type of sport described in the editorial.

Additional important milestones include:

* July 2006--the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA AHSAA Alabama High School Athletic Association ) voted to partner with AAASP to replicate the Georgia model in the Alabama public school system.

* 2006--The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh History
In 1871 the university began as Oshkosh State Normal School. The university was Wisconsin's third teacher-training school. Oshkosh Normal began the first state normal school in the United States to have a kindergarten.
became the first university to offer AAASP certification to students. Three more Universities will do so in 2007.

* 2006--AAASP issued National Track and Field Recommendations for students with physical disabilities.

* 2007--The United States District Court United States District Court

In the U.S., any of the 94 trial courts of general jurisdiction in the federal judicial system. Each state, as well as the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, has at least one federal district court.
of Alabama ruled in favor of the AHSAA in the case of Badgett vs AHSAA. The Court found that "to the extent the Defendants were required to extend a reasonable modification to Miss Badgett, they have met their obligation by establishing the separate wheelchair division for track and field." AHSAA utilizes the AAASP model.

* May 2007--New Jersey Assemblyman Fred Scalera introduced legislation that would direct the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), founded in 1918, is a voluntary, non-profit organization made up of 425 accredited public, private and parochial high schools in New Jersey. The daily administration is carried out by the Executive Director, Mr.  (NJSIAA NJSIAA New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association ) to work with AAASP to establish New Jersey's programs for student athletes with physical disabilities or visual impairments.

We are ecstatic that more is being discussed about making sports for this underserved population a common part of our nation's education system. Thank you, Joseph Winnick, for your work within this very important movement.

Sincerely,

Bev Vaughn
