A reminder in Roseburg.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Nearly eight years have passed since Kip Kinkel's shooting rampage at Thurston High School Thurston High School is located in Springfield, Oregon in Lane County. Their mascot is a black colt. Shooting

More will be learned in the coming days about the Roseburg shooting and the 14-year-old freshman, Vincent Wayne Leodoro, who is charged in the attack. Detectives have yet to identify a motive, and it's unclear whether the suspect fits the profile of so many other school shootings - of alienated loners lashing out in retaliation for bullying and intimidation.

Despite occasional outbreaks, school violence generally has been on the decline over the past decade, as schools and communities have taken serious, thoughtful steps to combat the problem.

Those steps include identifying and working with children at risk of committing explosive acts of violence; promoting tolerance and teaching children how to resolve conflicts without aggression; monitoring and eliminating bullying and intimidation; encouraging children to contact authorities when they learn that a student has a weapon or is planning an act of violence, and restricting access to firearms for young people.

There is always more work to be done, more lessons to be learned. Each tragedy can reveal new and productive ways to prevent future incidents - and to prepare for the worst in case prevention fails.

In the days to come, there will probably be a steady stream of visitors to the memorial at Thurston High School. This week's shooting at Roseburg adds renewed emphasis to the words engraved en·grave
