Business Correspondent NORTH Wales North Wales (known in some archaic texts as Northgalis) is the northernmost unofficial region of Wales, bordered to the south by Mid Wales and to the east by England. firm Jones Bros has achieved the highest ever mark in the UK in an environmental quality assessment. The Ruthin-based civil engineering company scored the accolade for its work on an pounds 8.5m contract to provide infrastructure for a pounds 13m business park at Parc Cybi, Holyhead. The 94.6% rating was secured in the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme, CEEQUAL CEEQUAL Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme . The scheme, backed by the Institution of Civil Engineers Founded on 2 January 1818, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is an independent professional association, based in central London, representing civil engineers. Like its early membership, the majority of its current members are British engineers, but it also has members in , aims to improve sustainability of civil engineering and public sector projects. Jones Bros was assessed on aspects of its environmental and social performance on the project, including use of materials, waste minimisation, reduction of carbon emissions, community relations, land use and ecology. CEEQUAL chief executive Roger Venables said any score above 90% was exceptional. "No other firm has achieved the level Jones Bros attained since the scheme's launch - it is one per cent higher than the previous highest." Jones Bros contract manager Hefin Lloyd-Davies added: "The company policy is to prioritise sustainability wherever possible across all of our work." Jones Bros processed 120,000 tonnes of materials excavated during the construction, to reuse in the roads it built for the project, saving 12,000 lorry movements on the B4545 and other Anglesey roads. Jones Bros' experts suggested ways to reduce building costs while maintaining the integrity of the overall plan, quality of materials and work. That shaved pounds 650,000 off the pounds 8.5m contract for the 120-acre enterprise, residential and retail development site. The Welsh Assembly is investing pounds 13m in land purchase and infrastructure for the business park, which aims to create up to 1,300 jobs. Jones Bros has a turnover that increased to pounds 35m in 2008-09. |
