A real gem of an idea; Two former Jewel and Esk students have fulfilled their ambitions by opening their own beauty salon, writes MIKE RITCHIE.

BEAUTY therapy students get to know each other pretty well during their college years - after all, a major part of their course involves practising their new skills on each other. And when Jackie McLaren and Kat Anderson were paired up for such practical sessions in their second year at Jewel and Esk College they really hit it off.

So much so that when they completed their courses they decided to start up their own business.

Mother-of-two Jackie, 31, returned to education following the birth of her second child while Kat, 21, went on the course after leaving school. But the women shared an ambition to work for themselves.

Jackie said: 'The tutors at Jewel and Esk were incredibly supportive. At the end of the final year of the course, when we concentrated on the business side of the beauty industry, I realised there might be a chance I could do this professionally.'

Kat said: 'After completing the course, we felt more inspired and more confident than ever about the prospect of opening our own salon.'

Both women are from Bonnyrigg so they set about looking for premises in the town.

Kat said: 'We had to spend a lot of time on starting up but it's been worthwhile.

We're pleased with what we've achieved so far.' The happy duo still retain close links with Jewel and Esk College.

Kat said: 'We had a work placement student here one day a week from the college and we hope that's something we can repeat. 'We wanted to give something back to the college as we got a lot of help and encouragement from lecturers when we set out to set up Indulgence.'

College principal Howard McKenzie said: 'It is always tremendously satisfying to see the skills we teach at the college put into practice in the real world
