Dennis Forbes's well written and lushly illustrated book is a welcome addition to the growing body of work that both explains and celebrates the art of African Americans.

Forbes's focus is on printmaking printmaking

Art form consisting of the production of images, usually on paper but occasionally on fabric, parchment, plastic, or other support, by various techniques of multiplication, under the direct supervision of or by the hand of the artist.
and printmakers. He skillfully manages to produce a text that will be helpful to both veteran art collectors and those just getting started. In fact, if you are just beginning to assemble a collection of limited edition prints, this book is an essential tool. He clearly explains the varied types of prints and printmaking, and how to properly frame a piece. He wisely argues against the impulse buy impulse buy nachat m d'impulsion

, urging collectors to know something about the artist and his/her work. Many of us who thought we were really doing something years ago when we lovingly bought inexpensive posters and had them beautifully framed would have made wiser choices if Forbes's book had only been available to us then.

However, please do not expect just a technical look at the art of printmaking and how to maneuver the art world. Collecting Limited Edition Prints also provides brief but interesting profiles on about two dozen printmakers, including artistic icons such as Elizabeth Catlett, Joseph Holston, Lois Mailou Jones Lois Mailou Jones (November 3, 1905 – June 9, 1998) was an African American Harlem Renaissance painter. Lois Mailou Jones, born in 1905 in Boston, Massachusetts, had a very big impact on African American artists.  and Jacob Lawrence. Each profile is accompanied by full-color examples of the artist's work. Forbes has produced a book that will look great on the coffee table, but, at the same time, will provide the collector with utility for years to come.
