After more than 50 years on West 47th Street, the New Dance Group has moved nine blocks south to West 38th Street, doubling its space (right). The studio was formed 75 years ago by Miriam Blecher, Nadia Chilkovsky, and a handful of others--all modern dancers who were imbued with the passion for social justice that was typical of the 1930s. Their motto: "The dance is a weapon in the class struggle." Sophie Maslow Sophie Maslow (March 22, 1911 - June 25, 2006) was an American choreographer, modern dancer and teacher, and founding member of New Dance Group.

Born in New York City in 1911, Sophie Maslow began her dance training with Blanche Talmud at the Neighborhood Playhouse School.
, Jane Dudley, Anna Sokolow Anna Sokolow (born February 9, 1910, Hartford, Connecticut; died March 29, 2000 in New York City, New York) was an American dancer and choreographer. She began her dance training with Martha Graham and Louis Horst at the Neighborhood Playhouse. , and Donald McKayle Donald McKayle (born July 6, 1930, New York City) is a modern dance and Broadway choreographer, director, and performer who has worked with many choreographers such as Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Anna Sokolow, and Merce Cunningham.  were a few of the dance artists who thrived there.
