A pair of queens.[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] FOR THE MAJORITY OF SAME-SEX COUPLES, the most explosive arguments over art theory likely revolve around paint chips for the dining room walls. But for some high-profile gay twosomes, collaborations in love have produced major artistic rewards that went far beyond HGTV-ready homes. With last month's release of the film Little Ashes (distributed by Regent Releasing, which is owned by the same parent company as The Advocate) the world got a glimpse into one of these artsy gay and lesbian pairings--the friendship and likely affair between surrealist Salvador Dali and poet Federico Garcia Lorca. These homo superduos might not replace Brangelina or Gyllenspoon on the cover of supermarket tabloids any time soon, but their amorous artistic legacies will certainly outlast Bennifer 1.0's. TomWag: Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner have been romantic and professional partners for over 35 years. Tomlin first requested a meeting with her future love after watching a Wagner-penned 1969 Afterschool Special about a one-eyed kitty. Jonnydoo: Iconic potter--Top Design-er Jonathan Adler and Barneys creative director-writer Simon Doonan have been a couple for 15 years and were legally married in 2008. Somehow any gift registry for the pair would have seemed redundant. Rimerlain: French poets Arthur Rimbaud and the Paul Verlaine had a short-lived, torrid romance involving buckets of booze, drugs, and ultimately, bullets. Thankfully, their poetry was less cliche. Royfried: In 2007 longtime Vegas entertainers Siegfried and Roy finally acknowledged to the world that they are gay but said they are no longer partners. It's not known if either is currently on the prowl. Susanovitz: Photographer Annie Leibovitz was recently forced to take out a hefty loan, presumably to pay the income taxes on the inheritance she received after the 2004 death of her longtime partner--writer and political theorist Susan Sontag. Had they been recognized as a legally married couple, Leibovitz's tax burden would have been nil. Chanvory: While many gay couples fight over a shared wardrobe, few actually win Oscars for their costume dramas. Gay producers-directors-lovers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory made over 40 films together, winning six Academy Awards in the process, before Merchant's death in 2005. Rohan: While Lindsay Lohan doesn't refer to herself as gay or bi, one of her longest relationships was with DJ Samantha Ronson. When they broke up (for reals?) in April, Lohan appeared on the cover of Us Weekly with the headline "I Am So Alone." It seems unlikely she'll stay that way. |
