Jamie Stillway

Saturday, the Axe and Fiddle

Sing Out! magazine compares Jamie Stillway's guitar playing to that of Bill Frisell and Leo Kottke. And in her biography, she's described as "eclectic and innovative."

This weekend, you can see her at Sam Bond's Garage and the Axe and Fiddle in Cottage Grove.

The Oregonian called Stillway's 2005 release, "Mell of a Hess," a "stellar piece of work" and "instrumental guitar at its best." The album features members of Taarka, Jackstraw jack·straw

The Slip

Tuesday, WOW Hall

The Slip is bringing a naughtily named band with it on tour.

Although this is an all-ages show, parents should know that the opener is likely to say something like, "Hi, we're Holy ---- and it's great to be in Eugene!" If your children are not ready to hear the F-bomb dropped several times over the course of the evening, it might be better to keep the young ones home on Tuesday.

For mature audiences, be prepared to watch the Slip live up to its claim to have brought the "epic" back to rock with its new album, "Eisenhower."

The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 at the door.

The Retrofits

Wednesday, Cozmic Pizza

Out of Portland's indie pop scene, the Retrofits like to mix their jazz and mainstream sensibilities.

With the instrumentation of a jazz ensemble and the catchy melodies of a rock band, the band's debut, "Away From Here," features 12 original tracks.

The 2007 album had an all-star team working on it, with engineering by Dave Friedlander, who's worked on albums for Prince and Pink Martini, a news release says. Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, Alanis Morissette, Jamie Cullum) mastered the recording in Hollywood.

"The band is now evolving, along with Denver's nationally charting the Fray, as one of the West's premier purveyors of expressive and engaging piano-pop," the band's publicity materials quote The Oregonian as saying.

The show starts at 9 p.m. for a $6 cover.
