Sir Tyrone Guthrie built Minneapolis' Guthrie Theater in 1963 after a career stage directing in London's West End and on Broadway left him disillusioned with the artistic standards and financial challenges of those sites, as well as out of a realization that non-New Yorkers in America had little access to professional theater. This is the new edition of Guthrie's 1964 account of the theater's inception and its galvanization of the American regional theater movement. There is a new foreword by Joe Dowling who has directed the theater since 1995.
