A new receiver for alien broadcasts.


Astronomers scanning the heavens for radio signals of intelligent alien life have only a handful of telescopes for their vast search. Last month, the SETI SETI (sĕt`ē) [Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence], name given to a series of independent programs to detect radio signals from civilizations beyond the solar system.  Institute in Mountain View, Calif., received a $12.5 million grant from former Microsoft executive Nathan P. The Allen Telescope Array The Allen Telescope Array (ATA), formerly known as the One Hectare Telescope (1hT), is a joint effort by the SETI Institute and the Radio Astronomy Laboratory (RAL) at the University of California, Berkeley to construct a radio interferometer that is dedicated  will consist of several hundred small radio telescopes with a total collecting area of 10,000 square meters. To be built at Hat Creek Radio Observatory The Hat Creek Radio Observatory (HCRO) is operated by the Radio Astronomy Laboratory (an Organized Research Unit of the Astronomy Department at the University of California, Berkeley).  in California, the array should begin operating in 2005 and will also be used for more-traditional research in radio astronomy.
