A new law in Utah, effective October 1, has classified flavored malt beverages as distilled spirit products. Previously, the ready-to-drink products had been classified as beers (malt beverages) and had been sold in grocery stores and supermarkets. Now, they can only be sold in state-controlled liquor stores, not grocery and convenience stores. In addition, all labels for these flavored malt beverages must receive clearance from the state before products can be put on shelves. Labels must also state dearly that the product is an alcoholic drink.
