A long and diverse career in Delaware's career-tech system: Derrickson finds great reward in working to maintain high standards in state's apprenticeship system.DALE DERRICKSON'S INVOLVEMENT IN CAREER and technical education in Delaware spans more than four decades. It began in the 1960s when he started working on the family farm; his career incarnations have been diverse since then, ranging from a carpenter to a tech math instructor to a licensed stationary engineer A stationary engineer is a licensed operator of boilers, steam turbines, auxiliary equipment (ie. air compressors/pumps) or refrigeration machinery. He or she works in factories, offices, hospitals, warehouses, ships or any other locations requiring the use that equipment. . Today, he is an adjunct adjunct (aj´ungkt), n a drug or other substance that serves a supplemental purpose in therapy. adjunct faculty member at Wilmington College Wilmington College may refer to:
Derrickson says working for the Delaware Department of Education to help maintain high standards in the state's apprenticeship system is one of his most favorite incarnations. In this capacity he takes care of grant funding and curriculum for all apprenticeship programs in the state. He isn't shy when talking about Delaware's apprentices; it's "the other four-year degree" he says, noting that the apprenticeship system is top notch with a rigorous standardized standardized pertaining to data that have been submitted to standardization procedures. standardized morbidity rate see morbidity rate. standardized mortality rate see mortality rate. curriculum, and instruction that demands the best of teachers. Derrickson says, "It's quite an opportunity for students and employers," because employers get someone properly trained at a low cost, and students get the equivalent of a four-year degree while getting paid. "It's a good deal for the state too." In Delaware's apprenticeships, employers provide on-the-job experience monitored by the state's Department of Labor. The state has developed high-quality standards for apprenticeships using the Contren[R] system with academics such as math, science and physics built into training. The apprenticeship system is state funded, and demand for it has increased by about 50 percent. State investment in the program is paying off; the Department of Labor finds that the money the state puts into programs such as HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free tech and plumbing pays for itself with the extra income tax paid into the system by graduates in less than two years. Otherwise, the state, being as small as it is, would have to rely on skilled workers coming in from neighboring neigh·bor n. 1. One who lives near or next to another. 2. As state director for SkillsUSA, Derrickson oversees advisers in primarily tech schools across Delaware. He is happy to report that SkillsUSA has seen a growth in Delaware over the last 10 years with full participation from every school on leadership contests (this has not always been the case). Overall there has been an increase in national contests from 40 to 78 skills, leadership and related contests. Derrickson is now very busy gearing up to write the new state plan under the recently reauthorized Perkins Act; he is also the state supervisor for teacher certification for skilled and technical sciences (formerly trade and industrial education), and is developing end-of-program state standards for students. At Wilmington College he teaches two courses--History, Regulations and Philosophy of CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) The difference between the way two materials expand when heat is applied. This is very critical when chips are mounted to printed circuit boards, because the silicon chip expands at a different rate than the plastic board. and Career and Technical Student Organizations Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) are vocational organizations primarily based in high schools.
