A list of Saddam and his associates


Some ranking members of Saddam Hussein's regime on trial or detained.

The following men stood trial for the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims after a 1982 assassination attempt on Saddam in the town of Dujail and were convicted on capital charges:

_ Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi president, guilty of murder, forced deportation and torture; executed Dec. 30.

_ Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief, guilty of murder, forced deportation and torture; executed Jan. 15.

_ Awad Hamed al-Bandar, former head of the Revolutionary Court, guilty of murder; executed Jan. 15.

_ Taha Yassin Ramadan, former Iraqi vice president, guilty of murder, forced deportation, torture and inhumane acts; sentenced to life in prison. The appeals court said the sentence was too lenient, and returned his case to the High Tribunal, demanding he be sentenced to death.

The following men are on trial for crimes related to the lead-up and execution of the Anfal campaign against Kurds during 1987 and 1988. All are charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, which carry sentences of death:

_ Ali Hassan al-Majid, Saddam's cousin and the former head of the Baath Party's Northern Bureau Command.

_ Sabir al-Douri, former director of military intelligence.

_ Sultan Hashim Ahmad al-Tai, a former defense minister and head of the Iraqi Army 1st Corps during the Anfal campaign.

_ Taher Tawfiq al-Ani, former governor of Mosul and head of the Northern Affairs Committee.

_ Hussein Rashid Mohammed, former deputy director of operations for the Iraqi Armed Forces.

_ Farhan Mutlaq Saleh, former head of military intelligence's eastern regional office.

Separately, Tariq Aziz, who as foreign minister was the most public face of Saddam's regime to the outside world, has not been charged in any cases, but is being held by U.S. troops.
