Writing on the Wall, a unique independent festival, returns for a month-long run at venues around the city from May 2.

After expanding the event last year to make the most of Capital of Culture, organisers say they were so encouraged by the response, they have continued on a larger scale.

Madeline Heneghan, festival development co-ordinator, said: "The 2008 festival really upped the stakes.

"We saw what was achievable and we have made it the norm." This year, the month-long festival examines the theme of the outsider, with a Latin flavour to some of the events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
