 U., Winston-Salem University, and Texas Southern are lesser-known drawings and lithographs of John Thomas Biggers (1924-2001). After formal training, Biggers was deeply influenced by six months spent in Ghana in 1957, and African abstract elements combined with rural Southern images formed his personal iconography iconography (ī'kŏnŏg`rəfē) [Gr.,=image-drawing] or iconology [Gr.,=image-study], in art history, the study and interpretation of figural representations, either individual or symbolic, religious or secular; . Art historian Theisen interviewed Dr. Biggers during the last 13 years of his life, and together they selected 100 representative works for this volume. The works are set in context by the text (created with the help of his widow) describing his life, career, and the development of his art.
