A letter of floods. (Letters).

The article "Farmers took fast track in settling Europe" (SN: 11/17/01, p. 308) notes that Joao Zilhao has hypothesized that the rapid spread of agriculture in Europe occurred as a result of people's need to escape conflicts in "heavily populated communities marked by class and social division" I believe a more likely cause is the catastrophic flooding of the Black Sea Black Sea, inland sea, c.159,600 sq mi (413,360 sq km), between SE Europe and Asia, connected with the Mediterranean Sea by the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles. It is c.750 mi (1,210 km) from east to west, up to 350 mi (560 km) wide, and has a maximum depth of 7,364 ft (2,245 m). Its largest arm is the Sea of Azov, which joins it through the Kerch Strait., which occurred 7,500 years ago. The story of this event and how it scattered a thriving agricultural population in all directions is well documented by William Ryan and Walter Pitman in their book Noah's Flood: The New Scientific Discoveries about the Event That Changed History (1998, Simon & Schuster).
