A lack of role models. As a youth I have always searched for those adults who could help me to realize my potential. I have found teachers, counselors, and family members to be role models. But there have been few queer adults to look up to. Queer people seem to lack the kinship kinship, relationship by blood (consanguinity) or marriage (affinity) between persons; also, in anthropology and sociology, a system of rules, based on such relationships, governing descent, inheritance, marriage, extramarital sexual relations, and sometimes shared by their straight counterparts. Even in Madison Madison, cities, United States Madison. 1 City (1990 pop. 12,006), seat of Jefferson co., SE Ind., on the Ohio River; settled c.1806, inc. 1838. It is a port of entry and a tobacco marketing center. , the queerest city in Wisconsin Wisconsin, state, United States Wisconsin (wĭskŏn`sən, –sĭn), upper midwestern state of the United States. It is bounded by Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, from which it is divided by the Menominee , I have been unable to find a connection between LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender youths and adults. During a weekend pilgrimage pilgrimage Journey to a shrine or other sacred place undertaken to gain divine aid, as an act of thanksgiving or penance, or to demonstrate devotion. Medieval Christian pilgrims stayed at hospices set up specifically for pilgrims, and on their return trip they wore on their to Madison pride this year, I noticed that queer youths and adults had difficulties coming together. Most of the youths attended the Ten Percent Society dance on the University of Wisconsin-Madison “University of Wisconsin” redirects here. For other uses, see University of Wisconsin (disambiguation). A public, land-grant institution, UW-Madison offers a wide spectrum of liberal arts studies, professional programs, and student activities. campus, while many adults either avoided it or congregated in the bar area of the dance. On the other hand, most of the adults attended the pride picnic and rally the following two days, but few youths were at those events. Queer youths and adults need to find common ground. I would have loved to have had a gay adult front my community help organize an event for our gay-straight alliance club at my high school. And gay youths need to do more to reach out to older queers. By getting involved in cross-generational projects, such as community centers, activism, and events meant to celebrate queer culture, youths and adults can come together. Gay youth groups have helped to fill the gap in role modeling, as have organizations like Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Unfortunately, there is much more work to be done. |
