More than a week before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) is the highest court in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The SJC has the distinction of being the oldest continuously functioning appellate court in the Western Hemisphere.  issued its groundbreaking ruling in favor of gay marriage, the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign had already joined the media blitz. The group unveiled a $1 million national ad campaign in major newspapers on November 10 to enlighten en·light·en

 executive director Elizabeth Birch Elizabeth Birch (born 1956, Dayton, Ohio) is an American attorney and former corporate executive who came to Washington in January of 1995 to head the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT organization. .

Four of the campaign's five ads feature same-sex couples talking about the hardships they face because they cannot legally marry, such as a senior couple who worry about passing on their pension and retirement savings to each other. A fifth ad profiles Keith Bradkowski, whose partner, Jeff Collman, was killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks but who did not qualify for spousal death benefits.
