A historical point of view.

I enjoyed your article, "Children's Camping in the Adirondacks, "in the July/August 2003 issue. The Adirondack camps Founded in 1904, Adirondack Camp is a coeducational summer camp located on Northern Lake George in Putnam Station, New York. During the summer, the camp houses up to 180 campers and 60 staff members.  seem to have preserved the essence of true camping: outdoor living with others the same age, away from home.

At the beginning of the article, you cite Ernest Er´nest

n. 1. See Earnest.
Balch's Chocurua as the first in the camp movement, but you do not go on to its successors: Camps Asquam and Pasquaney who were near each other and interwoven in·ter·weave
v. in·ter·wove , in·ter·wo·ven , inter·weav·ing, inter·weaves

v.tr.
1. To weave together.

2. To blend together; intermix.

v.intr.
with similar philosophies. Chocorua and Asquam were short lived but Pasquaney is having its 109th season this summer!

It was at Pasquaney that camp terms were introduced such as: "counselor"; "director"; "bugle calls Noun 1. bugle call - a signal broadcast by the sound of a bugle
signal, signaling, sign - any nonverbal action or gesture that encodes a message; "signals from the boat suddenly stopped"

recall - a bugle call that signals troops to return
"; and the "camp uniform." I realize that Pasquaney is not in the Adirondacks, but it should not be slighted in camp history.
