Scott (classics, U. of Leeds) offers a passage-by-passage historical and factual commentary on Book Six of fourth-century BC Greek writer Herodotus' Histories. In the 77-page introduction, he discusses Herodotus, his sources and use of them, the 499 Ionian revolt Ionian revolt

Uprising (499–494 BC) of some of the Ionian cities of Asia Minor against their Persian overlords. The cities deposed their own tyrants and, with help from Athens, tried unsuccessfully to throw off Persian domination.

The act of congress of April 30, 1790, s. 8, 1 Story's L. U. S. 84, punishes with death any seaman who shall lay violent hands upon his commander, thereby to hinder or prevent his fighting in defence of his ship, or goods committed to his trust, or shall make a revolt  and its aftermath, the various aspects of Spartan affairs, Datis' invasion of Eritrea and Attica, and Miltiades' expedition the following year. Readers are expected to follow along in a Greek edition of the Histories. Supporting the commentary are 23 appendices ap·pen·di·ces

 containing such information as the oracles to the Dolonci and Miltiades, the political charges in Ionia after the revolt, and problems in the Argos narrative paragraphs 76-84. Ten maps and three indexes are also provided.
