A helping hand to stay Young at Heart.


A CHURCH social club is helping pensioners stay young at heart.

The club, run by Cathedral House, the new multi-million pound church at St Thomas's Road, Folly Hall, offers everything from nail painting to bingo.

And many said it helps reduce loneliness.

Albie Humphries, 77, of Salendine Nook Salendine Nook is a district of Huddersfield 3 km (2 miles) to the north-west of Huddersfield in the English county of West Yorkshire.

, and Ken Wadsworth Kenneth John Wadsworth (born 30 November, 1946 in Nelson, New Zealand, died 19 August, 1976 in Nelson) was a New Zealand cricketer who played 33 Tests and 13 one-day internationals for New Zealand as a wicket-keeper, scoring 1,000 runs and dismissing nearly 100 batsmen, as New , 83, of Lindley, have been attending the weekly club along with Joan Earnshaw, of Newsome, and Mavis Hinchliffe, 75, of Oakes.

Mr Humphries said: "If there were more groups like this people wouldn't feel as lonely as they can do."

Joan Earnshaw said: "Everybody is so friendly, I was given a great welcome when I first came."

Volunteer Bridie A bridie or Forfar bridie is a Scottish type of meat pastry or pie, originally from the town of Forfar, similar to a Cornish pasty in shape, but the pastry is not as hard and no potato is used.  Kavanagh helps to run the club and said: "People can come here with a few problems, but we make sure they leave with a smile on their faces."

Young at Heart meets every Thursday from 12.45pm until 2.45pm and costs pounds 1 towards food and refreshments.
