A heavy burden.Responding to your July 16 issue on priests, Fr. Francis X. It is one of the typically Christian forms of asceticism. " (Correspondence, August 13). Yet Meehan fails to address why celibacy should be mandatory. The same medicine is not good for all souls. Many priests have been psychologically crushed by this burden. My fifty-nine years as a priest have convinced me that the attention of a wife would have saved many priests from sexual downfall, and especially from an early grave due to alcohol. (REV.) CONNELL J.
