A calcium deposit built up in Hillis' right thigh through the season and put him out of action after the Hogs' 31-14 win over Tennessee. Hillis' return to the team was in question.

Many wondered last year if Hillis was mentally spent playing what appeared to be third fiddle to the Hogs' wondrous tailback duo of Darren McFadden Darren McFadden (born August 27, 1987 in North Little Rock, Arkansas) is the 2006 All-American starting tailback for the University of Arkansas and the 2006 Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's top running back, the first sophomore to ever win the award.  and Felix Jones.

But as the results last year showed, Hillis must be on the field, somewhere, almost all the time. While McFadden may be the Razorbacks' first real threat to win the Heisman Trophy Heisman Trophy

McFadden says of Hillis, "He's a great blocker and a great pass catcher and is very important for our offense. A lot of plays revolve around Verb 1. revolve around - center upon; "Her entire attention centered on her children"; "Our day revolved around our work"

Hillis admits it's been an interesting and up-and-down four years at Fayetteville.

"Yeah, ever since I've been here it seems like I've been plagued with injuries, but I know it ain't true," the Conway native said. "My sophomore year I was healthy and I've just had a couple of freak deals. I can look at it in a negative way, but I try to look at it in a positive way. I look at this year as a new beginning and hopefully a new adjustment that I play in this offense."

Convincing Hillis that this was really going to happen turned into tough going for Lee when he arrived.

"I think he thought I was another new coach coming in telling him what he wanted to hear," Lee said. "You know I had to kind of convince him, give me a chance here and listen to what I'm saying before you prejudge pre·judge

Down went Hillis again for a week with what Houston Nutt termed a "tweaked" hamstring injury hamstring injury Sports medicine A muscle injury of biceps femoris, seen in sprinters and runners, when a contracted muscle meets a lengthening force, overpowering intrinsic muscle resiliency Management RICE, NSAIDs, gradual ↑ of pain-free activity–eg, . Lee, who has spent the offseason devising special plays for receiver Marcus Monk, tight end Ben Cleveland and fullback/H-back Hillis around his dynamic tailback tandem, found all three sidelined with injuries and sounded like he was ready to go postal.

"I've got all these plays put in and they're not here to run them," Lee literally cried in mid-August.

Hillis was back in uniform two weeks before the Sept. 1 opener with Troy University Troy University (formerly Troy State University) is a public university located in Troy, Alabama and founded in 1887, as "Troy Normal School". , the Conway product sounded wistful in saying this may be his last goround with football.

"I'm just saying that if something bad happens, you get an injury or something like that," Hillis said. "I've envisioned playing [in the NFL] and I ... well, of course I had dreams and stuff, but I try to put myself more in that reality that if that did not happen, I wouldn't be so upset. I put myself in check, I guess."

Hillis says the thigh injury, which he said occurred when he was hit by a helmet on the thigh fielding a punt in last year's opener against Southern Cal, is now 100 percent healed. He's bought into his multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose

role in Lee's offense while knowing that he can help the star tailbacks repeat last year's efforts.

"I'm trying to do well for them," Hillis said, "because they're unselfish guys and really good guys, really good friends. You want Darren winning the Heisman, you want Felix being All-American, you want both of them going into the NFL. That's something I want to be a part of."

Maybe he didn't want to be such a part of it in the past, Hillis says. After a vital freshman year he found himself no longer the top tailback, or even the top backup. His skills fit elsewhere in the offense, but Nutt tried to give Hillis as many touches as he could, including having him return punts. Few teams ever have put a 6-foot-2, 243.pounder in a deep back for punts, but after a couple of shaky moments, Hillis became Mr. Sure Hands and got the Hogs a handful of return yards to boot.

Plus, he led the Razorbacks in receptions from the fullback spot in 2005.

Still, Hillis had the belief he could be an I-back for someone else.

"Well, yeah, I'm not going to lie. It's true," he said of considering a transfer, "but God put me in this situation for a reason and I'm going to play to the best of my ability. As much as people say they'd like me to run the ball a whole lot, they're helping me out to become a better fullback blocking for [McFadden and Jones]. I'm trying to look at it the best way I can ... This is my last year, and I have to play the best I can."

Even Hillis has come to realize that Arkansas has never populated its offensive backfield quite like the Razorbacks have for 2007.

"What are the chances of me being here? Arkansas has never had a Heisman Trophy candidate, let alone two All-American candidates at the same time, and it's happening now," Hillis said. "God put me in this situation for a reason. I'm trying to do the best of my ability. It brings good publicity to this team and this program and I'm just lucky to be a part of it."

His position coach for three years, Danny Nutt Danny Nutt coached football with the Arkansas Razorbacks alongside his brother Houston Nutt at the University of Arkansas before resigning in July of 2007 for health conditions. , was forced to retire because of health issues during the offseason, and Hillis has found his replacement, Tim Horton This article is about the hockey player. , to be "a little more strict and not as laid-back as Coach Nutt. But he brings good things to the table."

Lee has convinced Hillis that Arkansas' offense will be more "pro-style" with the ball tossed around more this season. "I can't tell you how much more, but I know it's going to be more because that's what this team needs. We have to be good at it. If we get good at passing the ball, you can expect a lot of wins this year."

That last acknowledgement by Hillis gives Lee pause to smile.

"He IS important, because he gives us some real versatility and causes some problems for the defense because he's not your traditional I-fullback," Lee said. "He's in the backfield moving around. But at the same time we've got him out at flanker position one time, we've got in him the slot another time. Another time we're motioning him out to the slot or the flanker position.

"We're just trying to create some headaches for the defense because he can run and catch. We can't do that with everybody, but we can with him."
